Tenochtitlan flourished on an island in the lake, employing advanced water management systems for agriculture and flood control. After the Spanish conquest in 1521, much of the lake was drained to prevent flooding, and Mexico City was built on its former waters. Today, an ambitious restoration project is underway to recover part of this historic and natural ecosystem.
